This is my first serious attempt in doing a loose painting. Which means it’s not photorealistic, more impressionistic. I don’t love it but I had to paint to our art club’s theme. The good part is it only took two days. There is some glare on the corner of the paper because the drying paper warped the stretcher and caused some buckling. I’m not very happy with it but at least I have something to put in the show.

Storm Warning Step 2
Another session after drying. It has to dry again before I can do more. The sky is getting near to the actual photo colours as well as the sand. Still a few more washes to go.
Storm warning Step 1
Our local art club has a show in the museum here in December. The theme is “Panorama: Northern Ontario Landscapes”. I hate doing landscapes and have procrastinated for months. I finally found one of my photos to try and paint loosely but just started it this morning. I have two days before it has to be photographed and three days before it needs delivering! I have to paint it, wax it, and frame it. Wish me luck.
This is where I’m at after just over an hour. Many washes left to go but it has to dry before I add more washes.
It is 16 x 20”.

Finished and given a new title - Hidden Gold
I have finished this painting but still have work to do to get it ready for an outdoor venu where the paintings will be hung on trees along a walking trail for a week. It needs a spray varnish, framing, and as a final touch, I’m going to add Cedar cuttings on a few places around the edge. This is a good place for a bit of experimentation and that’s why the painting is more impressionistic rather that my usual realistic style.

Tulips step 4
Yesterday I spent a couple of more hours on this. I’m going to darken the background so you will just be able to make out the fact there is vegetation around. The focus will be the flowers. Still a few layers of colour to go for those. I have to lift some paint on the Tulpi leaves for highlights as well.

Tulips Step 3
A few more hours work all over the painting darkening the background layers and working on the Tulips. I’m not going to go photorealistic this time. The background will be very impressionistic so as not to draw attention from the flowers. Plus, this painting will be hanging outside in all weather for a week so I don’t want to put in a whole lot of work in case it gets ruined. It will be varnished but it will have to contend with the weather, insects, animals, and maybe even vandals. I hope to be finished the painting this week. I have others waiting in line to be done also with deadlines.
The photo has a bluish tint again that’s not there in real life.

Hidden Tulips Step 2
I continued blocking in shapes around the flowers. It will all be much darker at the end but I have to find the objects before I can correct the colours and value. I also experimented with colours of the Tulip petals.

Hidden Tulips Step 1
It’s been quite awhile. Now that gardening season is winding down and art show season is getting close, I have to get painting.
This one is for an unusual show put on by our local art club. The paintings will be hung along a trail through the woods for people to see as they follow the path.
I think it’s 12x 16” on wrapped canvas (watercolour paper wrapped and stapled around a canvas). It is of some lovely yellow Tulips I found in my yard hidden under some Cedar hedges.
So far I am just blocking in areas of colour to be able to understand where things are in the chaos of branches, leaves, and grass. I am also putting in Cedar branches using negative painting to keep some bright where the light hits. It will become clearer as I work on it. The fun part for this outdoor show is that I think I’ll finish it by draping some Cedar branches hanging over the edges in places to mimic how they looked when I found them. If I want to experiment this is the show. LOLThis photo has a blue cast to it for some reason. I’ll correct that in the next step.
